Integrity
Herbert Kuhner
Henri Rousseau was a simple man, and he had the integrity that only a simple man can have. He earned his livelihood as a customs official, but he was also a passionate painter. He continued to work at his job even after his paintings sold well. His colleagues were more sophisticated, and when they met in studios and cafés, he was the butt of many of their jokes. However, the former customs official became a major painter and his work found its way into museums.
One day, a museum guard apprehended a man with a paintbrush poised over a Rousseau painting. It was Rousseau. He was touching up his work. From that day on, museum guards were alerted to be on the lookout for a man with a paint box and a brush under his coat.
