Friends and Enemies
We believe in redemption,
and a reformed enemy can
become a good friend.
It’s better to have a friend
than an enemy.
Or is it?
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was our enemy,
but now he’s our friend
He may have orchestrated
the downing of PanAm passenger jet
over Lockerbie way back in ‘88
and other acts of terror in bygone days.
but Muammar is our friend now,
and we’re selling arms to him.
Our friend framed Bulgarian nurses
making them fall guys
for the criminal negligence
of his own health system
which bears the blame
for infecting Libyan children with aids.
He had confessions
extracted from the nurses
by having them raped and tortured.
Saddam Hussein was our friend,
and among other things,
we supplied him with the means
to manufacture poison gas
but then he became our enemy,
so we invaded his country
and hanged him.
The Sunni insurgents in Iraq
were our enemies.,
and killed our soldiers,
but now they’re our friends.
Bin Laden was our friend
but then he became our enemy.
So we invaded Afghanistan
but we let him escape from Bora Bora
to Pakistan for old times sake.
How can you guarantee that a friend
remains a friend?
Who can guarantee anything?
But one thing’s for sure:
an enemy who becomes a friend,
sooner or later
reverts to his original status.
