A Non-Peaceful Solution
Herbert Kuhner
Not too long ago, an Austrian cultural notable made the following advocation: “When democracy is endangered, it is legitimate to consider assassination. Hitler grew out of a democratic state and was elected….Must we wait until there is such a development, until there is a totalitarian situation, before we shoot?”
In my humble view this is not what democracy is about. Democracy should consist of a peaceful exchange of ideas which are then put to the ballot by their proponents.
Well, the person “targeted” by the afore-quoted statement is no longer among us. And what do we have? Do we have a land of sweetness and light in which democracy is not “endangered?” Is there now a new target, or targets?
If such an advocation would be adhered to, there would not be one assassination, but rather a St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.
