The Nth Council
“Close the doors!” said the pope. “We’ve just had the ultimate revelation and come to the ultimate conclusion. It seems that there’s nobody home upstairs, Sssshhhh! Don’t tell a soul! We must keep it a secret. We’ll make a vow of silence right here and now. No one must give us away, We’ll guide the faithful as we always have. What would they do without us? We’re with them from Baptism to Extreme Unction. We know what’s best for them, and we cap everything off with bliss after death. And certainly no one has ever come back to complain. The thing is to keep them happy and docile while they’re here.
It can’t be denied that we’ve never quite adhered to the truth, How long would we have lasted if we’d done that? And where would we be if we practiced the principles we preach? What’s changed? Is there any valid reason to close shop now? We’ll just add one more little white lie and go an doing business as usual.”
